We are a homeschooling family and we purchased these books to integrate into our self-made/collated English curriculum for our 8-year-old son.Having gone through several standard comprehension and grammar books published by the likes of Evan-Moor, Scholastic, Schofield and Sims and Oxford, we are thrilled to move on to this one, our first Language Arts book based on an actual book. The books are extremely well thought through and there is enough content in them to last at least a whole term's worth of work, if done in a slow, mindful, systematic way. The assignments vary in their complexity. Some require more introspection, while others are your standard comprehension questions. There are also crossword puzzles, grammar, synonyms, vocabulary words, and so on. Overall it is very comprehensive and well thought through. The Teacher's Guide is full of resources to better explain ideas to students, suggestions for further activities, and other useful resources. The reason we chose Mouse and The Motorcycle was because I realize the language of Beverly Clearly was something my son was reluctant to read. While he has read Beezus and Ramona, simply out of solidarity with Beezus (we have a little Ramona-esque three-year-old in the house), he was reluctant to read any of the other books. We soon learned it was owing to the language proving a little more challenging than the other books he had been reading (Roald Dahl, Andy Griffith) In an effort to get him to appreciate a different style of writing, we got him this book and the Novel Units student and teacher packets to go with it.As we use the Novel Units resources and make our way through the book, we are starting to see a change in the way our son is approaching the material. He's quicker, less reluctant, and generally receptive and dare I say, looking forward to the next exercise.
